Winter Precautions

Weather at Alpha House can change quite rapidly.  The following are guidelines for those using Alpha House during the Winter months (from November to March)
 

• Please come prepared with snow chains that fit your vehicle.
• Chains are required much of the winter on highway 20.
• Before leaving for Alpha House, please call Caltrans at 1-800-427-7623. Use a touchtone telephone, then punch in route 20 to obtain current road conditions...

Do not attempt to drive to Alpha House in snow conditions if there is a reasonable chance of getting stuck.
If for some reason, Alpha road is not plowed by the time you arrive, call Alpha House with your cellular phone (916) 765-2068 or call from Nevada City and find out when the road will be plowed.

(Note that there will still be 1-2 inches of snow on the road after plowing, so snow chains are mandatory on all two wheel drive vehicles.)
